More and more neighborhood HOA communities are using social media to post updates to local residents.
One of the biggest uses of social media in HOA communities is to keep residents updated about any neighborhood crimes. Unfortunately in many communities across the country today crime rates are increasing. This includes an increase in car thefts and property break-ins. In order to let residents know that this type of crime activity is going on, many HOA boards have signed up for social media accounts. If you look on Facebook today for example, you will see a lot of pages from neighborhood watch groups and HOA associations. Most have found that using social media is a very effective way to keep residents updated and informed. It is also a much quicker way to report a crime as soon as it happens – including posting sketches of suspected criminals. These postings include specific details about the suspect including any identifying marks and estimated height and weight. Having all this information helps residents be able to spot the suspect very easily. In addition, posting this type of information is also very helpful to the police.
Another way many HOA communities today are using social media is posting information about upcoming meetings and special events. Many communities host annual homeowners meetings, and social media is a very convenient way for them to post meeting agendas and reminders. Also, some HOA boards have reported that posting special event updates on Facebook has helped to increase resident participation.
However, some HOA board members have said that the biggest benefit they have seen by using social media is being able to cut down on printing and paper costs. Before using social media, many communities spent hundreds of dollars on printing services, printing paper and paying someone to post printed flyers in each building. Now all they do is post a few flyers in the community club house and post updates on their social media pages. The extra money they are saving is being used to plant flowers, paint hallways and make more timely building repairs.
Most HOA residents also like the convenience of having a community social media page. Some of the things they like the most include being able to check for daily updates about maintenance issues, the ability to post questions and complaints to board members, and also being to check updates about crime in the community.
There are also a few communities that have been able to generate additional revenue from promoted advertisements. This seems to be more prevalent in communities that have over one hundred residents. These advertisers are paying between twenty five to fifty dollars to advertise their services and products.
