Over the past few weeks there has been a lot going on at some of the major tech companies.
One of these companies is Apple. The company recently lost it’s head of gaming, Don Mattrick, to Zynga. This person was heavily involved in the design of the Xbox 360 gaming console. I am not sure if this is in response to the loss of Mattrick, but Apple recently hired Paul Deneve, who was the CEO of Yves Saint Laurent. Based on several articles I read, Deneve will be working on special projects. I am guessing that one of these projects will be an updated version of the Xbox. However, I also know that Apple is hoping to expand its product line so Deneve will probably be working on this as well.
This announcement was somewhat surprising because you don’t hear of a person transitioning from fashion to technology everyday. This makes me believe even more that Apple hired this person to help them design new products and to also upgrade the design of existing ones. It ‘s no secret that sales at Apple have been declining over the past two years, so hopefully Deneve will be able to bring some fresh ideas to the company. He will be reporting directly to CEO Tim Cook and I am sure we will be hearing more about his new role very shortly.
Apple has also been featured in the news recently regarding its latest commercial. I have seen the commercial and think it is pretty good. But based on several online comments and feedback it looks like I am in the minority. Some of the negative comments have included that the commercial looks dated and that the commercial is targeting an older audience. Translation: Apple products are for old people. I am not sure how people got this message from watching the commercial. I feel that the commercial does a good job of showing that Apple produces quality products and is a good company.
I hope that this negative feedback doesn’t prompt Apple to pull the plug on this commercial. Going forward however, I am sure that when the next commercial is being developed Apple’s ad team will think back to those negative comments.
The bottom line of all this is that Tim Cook will forever be compared to Steve Jobs. It doesn’t matter if he does something wrong or right, the comparison will always be there. I guess this is something that Cook has learned to live with.
Google has also been in the news recently, which includes becoming more involved in advertising. Not only is Google expanding its online advertising platform, but it is also supposedly getting involved in bricks and mortar advertising as well. This move (if true) will definitely help the company increase its advertising revenue and online presence.
