Two weeks ago I spent almost an hour trying to find some good music on the radio. I guess I first need to explain what my definition of good music is. My definition of good music are songs that have clean lyrics and make you happy. For some reason I having a hard time finding that combination in today’s music.
The reason I was trying to find some good music on the radio is because I wanted some music to work by. I had to complete a marketing project and I thought that some good music would make working more pleasant. I had anticipated that finding some good songs to listen to would only take a few minutes but instead it took me over an hour. And even after an hour I still didn’t find anything that I really liked. I have to say that I was dumbfounded at the lack of good stations on the radio today. Although I have not listened to the radio for a quite sometime, I had no idea that most of the old school music stations had gone away.
I want to state for the record that I have tried to listen to some of today’s music. Unfortunately I can’t understand the lyrics of most of today’s songs. I am not sure what the artists are saying and so I am not sure that I should be listening to it. Then there are the songs where I can understand the lyrics clearly and I feel that the overall message is disgusting. I had no idea that radio stations allowed this type of music to be played on the air. I guess I am thinking too much about the past days when music was screened and censored. This was done in order to ensure that listeners didn’t hear anything lewd or vulgar. Back then the most outrageous and questionable songs were from artists like Prince. Today his music wouldn’t even cause anyone to blink an eye.
I guess what I miss most about the songs of yesterday is that they put you in a good mood and made you want to sing. Some of the songs that used to make me feel this way are ‘Saturday in the Park’ by Chicago and ‘Love Train’ by the O’Jays.
Another thing about those good old artists is that you didn’t have to worry about their songs being inappropriate for children. I have read stories of parents riding in the car with their kids and almost crashing their car trying to change the radio station. It is pretty sad when songs are so offensive that you don‘t want your kids listening to them.
So back to my original question, what happened to all the good music?
