Getting involved in your community is one of the most self-fulfilling things you can do. No matter what type of community you live in, there is always a way you can contribute.
If you live in a community with a lot of senior citizens, you may want to consider volunteering to take some of your neighbors to the grocery store. This would be a great service for them, and also alleviate some of the stress of their families. Many of us start worrying about our families (especially our parents) when they start to get older. Although we often try our best to be there for them when they need us, there are times when we just can’t make it. This is why we appreciate when neighbors volunteer to help them.
If you have a van or large seat vehicle, you may be able to take two neighbors to the grocery store at one time. Although you may not be able to do this often, try to make an effort when the weather is bad. It would be a shame that one of your elderly neighbors has the money to buy food but is unable to get to the grocery store.
One way a couple got involved in their community, was by coordinating a tour of Holiday of Lights for the seniors in their neighborhood. They started by locating nearby neighborhoods with houses that had amazing displays of holiday lights. After identifying the neighborhoods they started making a destination map for the tour. Next they rented a bus that seated twenty people. Once everything was confirmed, the couple started advertising the tour on flyers and social media. After just one week the tour was booked for the entire season. The tour was scheduled to run for two weeks, but increased demand caused the couple to extend it. The tour was free, and all guests were given some holiday cookies, hot chocolate and tea while they enjoyed the tour. The only guidelines for the tour were that you had to be over sixty and lived within the immediate community area.
I thought this was not only a great thing to do for seniors in the community, but it was also something very creative and fun.
If you live in a condo community and want to get involved, think about starting a community blog. In this day and age it is so hard to communicate all updates in a timely fashion to neighbors. In addition to posting things like meeting dates and times and community news, also post other things like recipes and job postings. You never know if someone in your community may be looking for a job so all this type of information will be very helpful.
