Changing a college major is not easy; however in this current economy it has become necessary for thousands of college students.
There was a time when you chose education or business as your college major you were very likely to get a job when you graduated. However this unfortunately is not the case anymore. Today there are thousands of college students across the country that have decided to change their majors so they can increase their chances of getting a job.
I recently saw an interview that featured two college students who were previously majoring in education and had goals of becoming teachers. Although they still have a passion for teaching, they realized that there were not a lot of teaching jobs available that paid a good salary. In addition, they didn’t like the fact that many schools were cutting their budgets, which meant that teachers would have fewer resources to work with.
Both students admitted that the decision to change majors was not easy, but they knew it was the right thing to do. So what did these two students change their majors to? One changed their major to visual communications and the other student changed their major to international business. The student who is now working towards a visual communications degree has hopes of working for a film studio or ad agency after they graduate. The student now majoring in international business hopes to work for an international consulting firm or an international non-profit organization.
There are also many college students today changing their majors so they can increase their chances of getting a really high paying job after graduation. It’s not because they want to purchase a million dollar home or fifty thousand dollar car, it’s because they need enough money to pay off their student loan. It may be hard for some to believe, but many college students change majors strictly for personal financial reasons. In some cases this means putting their true career goals and passions on the backburner. This trend is expected to become even more common in the near future because current student loan rates are out of control.
So what are these students majoring in to increase their chances of getting a high paying job? Some have switched their majors from accounting to corporate banking and others have changed their majors from marketing to sports management. Many of those now majoring in corporate banking are hoping to land a job at a Wall Street firm or a major bank. While some of those majoring in sports management hope to get jobs at a professional sport marketing agency.
Making the decision to change your college major may not be easy, but as you can see from above sometimes it is necessary.
