My friends are always asking me where they can get ingredients for appetizers that don’t cost a lot of money. I’m glad to say that I have found several places where you can get affordable appetizer ingredients.
One of the places you can find cheap appetizer food is the dollar store. I know this surprises some of you, but you really can find cheap appetizer ingredients there. At dollar stores like Dollar General and Family Dollar you can get some good deals on tortilla chips, salsa, and nuts. At Dollar General you can get a large can of peanuts for $1.50. At a regular grocery store these same can of nuts would cost $3 or more. In addition to plain peanuts, you can also find almonds, Brazilian nuts, and cashews. At these low prices, you could afford to create a really cool appetizer nut tray.
At dollar stores you can also find discounted prices on dried cherries and raisins. For an informal party, you could serve a large bowl of almonds and plain peanuts mixed with raisins or dried cherries.
At Family Dollar, you can find large bags of Tortilla chips and salsa for under $2. This combination makes a great appetizer, especially if you are hosting a party with a Mexican theme. At this price you could buy three bags of chips and two jars of salsa, and it would only cost about $8.
If you want an appetizer that is a little more filling, try getting some olives or hummus from the grocery store. You can either buy olives in a jar, or you can get some from the deli counter. The ones from deli are usually fresher, and they have more marinated flavors. You could serve a tray of black, red, and Spanish olives it would only cost you about $6.
Hummus is another affordable appetizer ingredient that you can find at the grocery store. For years you could only get plain hummus, but today you can find hummus infused with seasonings like virgin olive oil, red peppers, and garlic. A container of hummus only cost about $3. To go along with the hummus you could serve some toasted pita chips, which you can buy or make yourself. A bag of pita chips typically cost $2, and you can get a loaf of pita bread for $1.50 in the bakery department.
The Farmer’s Market is also another place you can find affordable appetizer ingredients. Some of these include cherry tomatoes, sweet potatoes, small red potatoes, and eggplant.
Cherry tomatoes make great appetizers when you marinate them and put them on a toothpick. You can take the sweet potatoes, peel them and make baked fries, and you can bake the eggplant and make a cool creamy dip. At the Farmer’s Market all these ingredients are very affordable.
