Traditionally, most college students majored in fields like international business and finance so they could get a high paying white collar job. However over the past few years more and more students are shifting their focus to high paying jobs in blue collar fields.
One blue collar occupation that pays very well is an electrician. A person with electrician skills and experience can earn a very good living, and also has a good platform to start their own company. The reason this position pays so well is the level of knowledge needed and the potential risks involved. Repairing an electrical outlet or burned out fuse may look easy, but it isn’t. Some of the potential risks and dangers involved making electrical repairs include electrocuting yourself or causing an electrical fire. If you live in an attached condo or in an apartment the risk and danger increase because you can potentially cause electrical damage to a neighbor’s home or the entire building. So as you can see there are many reasons why this occupation pays so well.
Another blue collar occupation that pays well is a construction foreman. This position is responsible for overseeing all phases of construction activity and making sure the project is completed on schedule. It is very important for a construction project to have a foreman, because if not there could be a lot of potential problems. Some include improperly installed electrical wiring, improperly installed roofs, improper floor installation, and elevators not meeting safety standards. If any of these scenarios occur, there is a high risk that the property will not be safe to occupy. In order for any newly constructed property to be safe (whether residential or commercial), every little detail must be done correctly. The salary for construction foreman varies based on project, and commercial foremen typically earn more than residential construction foremen.
Plumbing is also another blue collar field that pays a good salary. Most of us have had to call a plumber at least once in our life, and we were willing to pay whatever it cost. That’s because in most instances when we call a plumber, a water situation has gotten totally out of control. I know that I have been guilty of this. It is for this reason that some plumbers can charge $20 to $30 per hour. This may not seem like a fair price, but if you are having a major plumbing emergency you will find a way to pay.
In addition to residential plumbers, commercial plumbers also make a good salary too. A commercial plumber has to deal with more complex plumbing issues, and a lot more potential problems.
So if you are looking for high paying career, consider one in a blue collar field.
