Crime seems to be on the increase in many cities lately including Detroit, Chicago and Atlanta.
Most people are not surprised to hear that crime is increasing in Detroit, since it has been frequently called one of the most dangerous cities in the country. Although crime has been something that Detroit police have dealt with for a long time, there hasn’t been an increase like this since the late 1970’s. The types of crimes on the increase are street robberies and home break-ins. Some residents attribute the increase in crime to the city’s high unemployment rate. They believe that if more young people had jobs, the number of street robberies would go down. However, there are other residents who believe that crime is on the rise in their city because too many young boys don’t have fathers. Regardless of what the cause is, something needs to be done about Detroit‘s growing crime problem. If not, the city will never be able to attract new residents or business developments.
A few weeks ago there was an online article about the growing number of teen deaths in Chicago. A large number of these deaths were related to drug and gang activity in south side neighborhoods. This has included gang initiations and retaliation against drug dealers. Despite the growing number of drug and gang related deaths, local police feel that they have made a lot of progress in decreasing overall crime. Local Chicago business owners have also become involved in reducing crime in south side communities. Some of this has included donating money to create safety programs and funding the construction of neighborhood activity centers. They are hoping that giving local teens something constructive to do will divert them from joining gangs and becoming involved in illegal drug activity.
Atlanta is another city that has seen an increase in crime. Although the city’s mayor has publicly stated that overall crime is down, local residents have been complaining about a steady increase in street robberies and home break-ins. A large percentage of break-ins are occurring in in-town neighborhoods, and being committing by criminals as young as fourteen years old. It is pretty scary to think that someone this young is capable of breaking into a home and threatening a homeowner with a gun. To help make their community safer, some in-town residents have started neighborhood watch groups. These groups consist of volunteers who patrol neighborhoods and report any suspicious activity or behavior.
In addition to large metro cities like Atlanta, Detroit and Chicago, a lot of smaller cities are also seeing an increase in crime. Drug and gang related activity is something most small town police departments are not used to dealing with, so they often ask for assistance from larger metro police departments.
