The 1970’s produced some great movies and TV shows. There were some shows that I enjoyed so much that I would love to see them remade with a new updated cast.
The first show I would like to see remade is “Welcome Back Kotter”. The original featured several talented actors that included John Travolta, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs and Gabe Kaplan. The show format was based on a group of academically challenged high school students who called themselves the “sweathogs”. Although it would be hard to beat the original cast, I think it would be fun trying. A new updated version of the show could feature a new class of sweathogs and highlight issues that many high students struggle with today.
Another thing that “Welcome Back Kotter” a classic comedy series was the theme song. The theme song was so popular that it was re-recorded and won award. I think it would be so cool to see a set of young songwriters come up with a new theme song for the remake. I also think it would be cool to let some of the original cast select the new cast members.
The “Rockford Files” is also another 70‘s show that should be remade. The original show starred actor Jim Garner and ran from 1974 to 1980. The format of the show was based on private eye Jim Rockford taking on unusual and very dangerous investigation cases. The show became so popular due to the exciting storylines and Jim Rockford’s unique sense of humor. There were scenes where Rockford would find himself locked in a trunk and running (on foot) from the mob. I think it would be a lot of fun to remake this show with a new leading actor.
Just like Welcome Back Kotter, the Rockford Files also had a very catchy and memorable opening theme song. I think a cool twist for the remake would be to update the original theme song with a new jazzy beat. Actor Jim Garner passed away last year, which is a shame because it would have been fun to see him appear in a guest role in the updated version.
I think a lot of people would want to see a remake of the original “Soap” comedy show. This had to be one of the funniest shows of the 1970’s. It ran for four seasons from 1977 to 1981. The story was centered on two crazy families, the Tate’s and the Campbell’s. What made this show so unique was that there were usually two or three storylines going on at one time, which included a mob kidnapping and a murder mystery. I can think of several current actors who could reprise these roles, and possibly make the remake funnier than the original — if that’s possible.
