There was a time when I really enjoyed watching talk shows, but I find most of the ones today boring.
My favorite talk show from back in the day was the Phil Donahue show. I liked Donahue’s hosting style and he also used to have some really interesting guests. In addition, Donahue’s show covered topics that were of interest to mainstream audiences. Today, I find most talk shows are focused on sensationalism and too much celebrity gossip.
One talk show that I don’t really care for is the Steve Harvey show. I am sure there are a lot of people out there who don‘t share my viewpoint. Fortunately, being in the minority has never bothered me. What I don’t like about Steve’s show is that everything seems to have some sort of “sexual” undertone to it. In addition, the guests on his show seem like they were coached or told to ‘overact’. And it’s really ridiculous the way Steve seems surprised when one of his guests says something sexually suggestive or acts outrageous. I guess the television audience is supposed to be stupid enough to believe that he was not expecting his guests to act like this. It’s really a shame that the show is written this way – because there are times when Steve has good topical discussions on his show, but these discussions get overshadowed by his outlandish behavior.
Another talk show I don’t care for at all is the Wendy Williams show. This has to be one of the most obnoxious shows I have ever seen – and I have only seen her show twice. The majority of the show is about celebrity gossip and asking guests uncomfortable questions. I can’t imagine how she is able to book guests for her show, because I’m sure that by now most celebrities know what her show is all about. This is sad because Williams’ has had some interesting guests on her show, but she doesn’t give them much chance to talk.
I also didn’t like the Bethenny Frankel talk show. Thankfully the show was cancelled. To me it looked like she was trying too hard, and she constantly talked over her guests. Not liking Frankel’s talk show is kind of ironic for me, given the fact that I enjoyed watching her during the first season of the “Real Housewives of New York” reality show. (Please note I said the first season, because after that the show went downhill fast”. On the reality show I enjoyed Frankel’s sense of humor and quick comebacks, but on her talk show I found her annoying. Maybe her personality is a better fit for reality TV.
I also want to note that I wasn’t a big fan of Oprah or Sally Jesse Raphael’s talk shows either.
