I recently saw several news programs that gave an overview on which degrees will be the most popular for the next few years.
These were really some interesting programs because they all did a mini slideshow on how degree majors and college students have changed over the years. From these slideshows I was able to learn that during the 1970’s and 80’s the majority of college students were majoring in either business or education. These slideshows even broke these statistics down by gender. I am sure you are not surprised that more men during this time were majoring in business, and the majority of female college students were majoring in education. The men went on to work in the corporate sector, and female college graduates went on to work as teachers in elementary and high schools.
As the country entered into the 1990’s, the most popular degrees expanded into finance and advertising. A large number of male college students began taking finance related courses such as banking and corporate accounting. The 1990’s also saw an increase of women majoring in finance related degrees. A large of number of these women went on to work as finance managers for hotels, manufacturing companies and hospitals.
The 1990’s was also a time when advertising degrees became very popular. Although the advertising industry had been around for a long time, getting an advertising degree was not a priority for most college bound men and women until the early 1990’s. By this time the advertising world was changing and expanding, and offering a lot more diverse career opportunities. But even at that time, there were still more men than women entering the advertising field. Which may have something to with the fact that the advertising industry has often been referred to as a ’good ole boys club‘. Which is also the reason why we didn’t see a lot of women in key advertising positions during that time. Unfortunately there are still not a lot of women in key high advertising positions today. Which is a trend most prevalent at large advertising agencies. Fortunately a growing number of women are launching their own advertising businesses.
Enter the year 2000 and the country started seeing more and more people began majoring in technology. The reason for this is because at that time a lot of technology companies were being created. As a result, many people felt it was a smart educational move to develop technology skills. Some that did went on to work at small startup tech companies, while others went on to work at major tech companies like Microsoft and Apple.
Today some of the most popular degrees are international finance and business degrees with an emphasis on sports management or entrepreneurial studies.
