Hosting an Old School party is a cool way to enjoy good food, old fashioned movies and classic music.
During the 1970’s many of us remember listening to our favorite songs during the summer and cooking in the backyard. This was a time when hosting a backyard music party complete with grilled food, soda and beer was a weekend tradition.
If you are longing for the days of old school music, try hosting an old school party for yourself, family and friends. Unsure how to get started? Don’t worry, below are some easy to follow tips and ideas.
One of the first things you will need when hosting an old school party, are some vinyl 45 records. For anyone reading this who doesn’t know what a vinyl 45 record is, it’s round shaped and black, and the name of the song, artists and who wrote it is printed on a colorful label. For all you guys under age 30, this was the primary way that people ’back in the day’ listened to music. Now that the history lesson is over, let’s get back to the party planning.
Take your vinyl records and hang them throughout the party room. If you have any vinyl album covers, hang them on the wall. Next, get two long tables and cover them with a colorful table cloth. The first table will be used for snacks and the second table will be used for desserts and beverages.
When it comes to the food, keep it simple. An easy to make snack is baked flavored sweet potato chips. To save time, you can buy the sweet potato chips from the store. The chips come in a variety of flavors such as paprika, barbeque, and parmesan. If you want to make your own flavors, buy a couple bags of plain sweet potato chips and add your own seasonings.
To finish off the snack table I recommend making small individual pizzas, and adding bowls of nuts and olives, and garlic bread cut into small squares. For a beverage, I recommend making raspberry limeade and a strawberry pineapple punch.
Two easy to make desserts are chocolate dipped pretzel sticks and chocolate chip cupcakes. I don’t know why, but most people love the sweet salty combination of pretzels and chocolate. To make them, all you need is some melted chocolate and several bags of thick pretzel sticks. Dip one end of each pretzel stick in the chocolate, and sprinkle on nuts and coconut. For the cupcakes, make a batch of chocolate cupcakes topped with vanilla frosting, and sprinkle on white and vanilla chocolate chips.
Next you will need a DJ and some music trivia games. Also, make sure that the room you select for the party is large enough for old school dancing.
